Fishing
Reports - Wilson Lake
Wilson Lake
is known as the deep lake when compared to Wheeler and Pickwick
Lakes. It still holds the title of the number two World Record
holder for a 10 lb 6 oz smallmouth bass caught below Wheeler
Dam. Sam believes that the new world record smallmouth is swimming
in either Wilson or Pickwick Lake. There are many 8 lb fish
caught each year (go north to the Great Lakes if you want numbers;
go to Wilson or Pickwick ofr 8 plus pound trophies).
Wilson and
Pickwick Lakes have the longest growing season of any smallmouth
waters in the United States. We are the southern most point
of smallmouth territory in the U.S. Wilson Lake is made up with
many rocky points, rock bluffs, pebbled points, drop offs, ledges
and many underwater humps. Many of theses underwater "secret
spots" (Humps, rock piles, and log piles) can be found
within three miles below Wheeler Dam (this is where your Atlantis
underwater camera comes in handy). Just make sure you have a
good Garmin GPS so you can find the spots again. Water flow
from the dam can make the difference between a good day or a
bad day depending on the amount of water flow. Water current
constitutes how these small mouth gather around these rock piles,
humps, and anything that causes an eddy around the structure.
Sam prefers tubes, grubs, spinner baits, and top water stick
baits during the summer months. Live bait accounts for many
of the trophy size fish caught each year.
